Firsts & Lasts

We never forget our first and last moments afield with our faithful, four-legged companions. From first points, first retrieves, and first trees to final seasons and last hunts, these benchmarks define our narratives as hunting dog owners and compel us to return to the field time after time.

Here at American Field Sportsman’s Journal, we share in the joys of a promising new pup and empathize over the loss of a once-in-a-lifetime dog that has passed on. We want to celebrate these moments together as a community and invite you to share your favorite “First” or “Last” story with us as we honor the dogs who always devote their very best to us. If you’d like to be considered for publication, please submit the following and we might use it in an upcoming issue.

  • A short essay with 500-800 words total (brief yet thorough explanation, include all the important details: who, what, when, where, why, how);
  • Submit a Microsoft Word Doc with a common font size 12;
  • Feel free to include a creative headline;
  • Include two to three photos;
  • Send materials to Editor, Chris Ingram at editor@americanfield.com
